As long as I can remember, I have been working with a variety of gods and beings. The work that I do, both publicly and personally, calls upon myth and legend to find the threads that can be woven into our modern lives. Through this work, I have been able to find the strength, wisdom, and healing I need. Over the years, I have found that these stories contain important lessons. They were significant thousands of years ago and the themes still ring true today. Honestly, I feel that they are just as important now as we are all searching for understanding between ourselves and our world. By reaching into the pages of the past, we can find the seeds of wisdom and plant them in our own lives. We can find inspiration. We can see our own pain and trauma. We can recognize common themes and begin to chart a new way forward as we break old and tired patterns. As a witch, these stories are more than whispers from a time long ago.

An Open Letter of Gratitude to the Points of Light in My Life
I remember sitting on my bed as a preteen, writing by the light of the street lights till all hours of the night. Page after page I would fill my notebooks with poetry, short stories, thoughts, and reflections. I would dream of the ways my life would unfold. A million different outcomes were created and…

There is a stillness growing within me. It is a gift that I am happy to embrace. The last few weeks have been quite difficult for a lot of us. Whether it is written in the stars and planets or the bristling energies of our wonderfully human lives, it hasn’t been easy. I am constantly reminding myself that this is the process of discovery – of myself, my relationships, and my magick. I chose to walk this path of self-exploration and sometimes I just need to stop my routine and take a break. The breaks aren’t just are for self-care. They are a chance for me to stop and listen to what my heart, body, and soul have to say.

Deep in the heart of the earth, there is a cave. It is still. It is quiet. Filled with hope and potential, we gently tread upon the winding, spiraling path. Slowly, we walk. Step by step, we descend. Step by step, we move towards the center of the Earth, searching for the sacred cave. Finding our way through the darkness, the candlelight that guides us flickers. Shadows of all shapes, sizes, and even memories dance along the walls, nudging us to ask ourselves questions that are not so easy to answer. Moving slowly, we feel a heartbeat that pulses beneath our feet. It matches the beat and rhythm of our own inner workings. When we connect to it, peace that washes over us. As we trust this inner rhythm, the candle flame becomes steady, strong, and bright. So do we.

Walking along a trail in any New England town, you can almost bet on seeing a stone wall. I love to spot these boundary lines as they snake through the forest, winding their way through history. Sentient beings, these moss-covered stones stand along the edges continuing to hold space long after their creators walked their lands. Centuries later they still stand. Protective. Vigilant. Silent witnesses. The stone walls saw so many changes. Perhaps they experienced them as well as new boundaries drawn. These stone guardians have stories to tell and lessons to share if one is willing to listen. Some may see just an old stone wall while other know they are much more than that.

When the children’s echoing laughter through the streets on Halloween fall silent, a presence rises along the edges. The wind blows a little longer and colder. The golden light hangs lower now, casting strange shadows where curious shapes are conjured only to quickly disappear. There was a shift that took place while we were not looking. It was a shift that now pulls the sunlight low across the horizon and lulls the vibrant life around us to begin its long winter slumber. For the time has come for her to walk across the landscape once again, preparing us for the growing dark days and lingering cold nights. It is time to slip from what we think we know and travel into the liminal spaces once again. It is in these mysterious places, where we can open ourselves up for exploration and contemplation. In the borderlands, we can do the deep work in order to slough off the parts of us that weigh us down and open ourselves to release and healing. It is here, where we can dream. And if we choose to walk with her through these spaces, we may be granted glimpses of what can be, as long as we don’t fall prey to the illusions of shadows at play.

As October fades into November, we can feel the slipping away of what we see and understand in order to enter the realm of the liminal. Shedding our skins and questioning our patterns, we walk the changing tide of light to dark, life to death. We are exposed in ways that are uncomfortable for us as we willingly open our heart to those darker, shadowy aspects of ourselves. It is in those spaces where we will be able to retrace our steps and seek out what we are longing for.

Last spring, my beautiful and enormous lavender plant almost didn’t make it through the winter. It wasn’t a particularly hard winter, but somehow it didn’t fully survive. I had to trim her back 85% – 90% and was crushed to see her so thin and fragile.

The decent into the gorge was a steady and steep decline. The once bright, golden morning sun that warmed me is now filtered through the lush canopy, allowing a chill to settle upon my skin. A cool breath of a breeze reaches up from the forest below. The bending the tree branches whisper to the residents that a witch walks among them this day. Was it a welcome? Was it a warning? I felt their presence. I felt their eyes. I felt their curiosity as I made my way along the slow and twisting path.

For quite a few months, I felt a longing deep within me. I had difficulty naming it and was unable to describe it. At times, I felt loss and grief. There was even a pang that weighed heavily on my heart and mind. Sometimes it was a wave that washed over me, casting a shadow where I felt the confusing feeling of being lost and alone. Then there was the anger and frustration. What was going on within me that led to such an unexpected eruption? I questioned everything. There was an indescribable emptiness that I felt and it truly confused me. I wasn’t sure why, but it was there inside me and it was very real. It would emerge while I was going about my business with my daily mundane tasks. I felt a sadness or a longing that I couldn’t quite name. It would appear quickly and out of the blue but would linger like a ghost in me.
